What is hypnosis? Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state of consciousness that we experience on a daily basis to some extent when we are doing routine tasks such as driving on ‘automatic pilot’, engrossed in reading a good book or absorbed in an enthralling film. In this state, we are aware at some level of everything that is going on around us but our attention is focused elsewhere.
What does hypnosis feel like? The main experience is one of deep relaxation, both physically and mentally. Occasionally, people have a physical sensation of their body temporarily feeling heavier or lighter. Some people also report a heightened state of mental alertness.
Can anyone be hypnotised? Some people are more responsive to this state than others, but all can enter a state of hypnosis if they wish to do so.
Can I be made to do or say things I don’t want to do when under hypnosis? You are always completely in control of yourself throughout hypnosis and will only do and say what you wish to.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis? You may wish to take your time coming out of hypnosis if you have relaxed deeply but you will always come back to your usual state of consciousness over a short time.
How does hypnotherapy work? Hypnotherapy uses the naturally occurring trance state of hypnosis to allow you to engage directly with your subconscious mind. It side steps the monitoring, controlling conscious mind to allow you to get in touch with the real you. It enables you to tap into your true memories, thoughts and emotions rather than just what your censoring conscious mind allows you to access.
Is hypnotherapy safe? Hypnotherapy is a safe relaxing process that empowers you to be the person you want to be.
How many sessions will I need? The number of sessions varies with the person and the issue. It often only takes a few sessions to make the changes that you wish to make.
Are there side effects? Following a session you may feel more energised or relaxed for a while afterwards. Longer term, hypnotherapy may change the way you view certain aspects of your life and how you wish to behave.
